Who I am

I came to the Netherlands in 1980 after completing an MSc in Politics and Sociology at the University of London. I’ve been working as a freelance Dutch-to-English translator since 1983 and as an editor and copywriter since 1985.

From 1990-2007, I worked part-time for the Translation Department at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a translator and reviser. I continued to expand my own editing, writing and translation activities and, in 2007, left the ministry to concentrate full-time on freelance work.

Since then, I have gradually focused my work around translating books – mainly in popular science and the social sciences – and working for clients in the not-for-profit and public sectors. In 2007, I was approved as a literary translator by the Dutch Foundation for Literature.

Work experience

In the 1980s, I worked mainly for translation agencies, translating and occasionally editing or writing a wide variety of commercial and non-commercial texts.

During my 17 years at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I translated and revised policy documents, reports, speeches, letters, website and other PR texts, conference contributions and proceedings. I specialised in development cooperation and international relations.

In the same period, I gradually acquired more clients, mainly in the public and not-for-profit sectors and in higher education. This brought my freelance work more in line with my work at the ministry, and enabled me to benefit from my background in political science. Regular clients at this time were Nuffic, for whom I wrote a weekly newsletter for eight years, and the ISS, where I edited the Alumni Magazine and later the magazine DevISSues.

Through Nuffic, I was selected to translate The Low Sky’, by Han van der Horst. The book, published by Scriptum, was originally intended as a guide to the Netherlands, its history and its people for students and others coming to live in the Netherlands for a short period. It has now sold more than 40,000 copies and an eighth fully revised edition was published in 2016. I have since translated and edited several works of fiction and non-fiction.

In 2007, I felt that I had a sufficient experience and a broad enough client base to return to full-time freelancing.
